I think its a mix of insecurity and a tease. It's also perhaps a way to fend off unwanted gazes and approaches.

I loved gay bath houses, but have "aged out" at 74. I have never wanted to be that "old guy" there. Nevertheless, I have many fond memories. I don't think my non gay male friends get it when I talk about it, which is consequently rarely.
