I have had the same experience. As long as there are those who believe they are better than us, we will continue to experience not only dissonance, but sadness.

Beyond that, as one who grew up in the 50s and 60s, I can assure you that there are indelible scars of the closet that can never be eliminated. I too am happy, but I still struggle.
